A Prayer for Someone who has Forgotten how to Dance
Some memories that bring happy tears to my eyes are the ones where the music is playing and the diapered rears are bouncing. When the toddling little one begins to hear the tune and can’t help but find the beat, the little legs pump and they bounce with wide grins.
The little one knows something we may have forgotten: We were made to dance.
We were made to sway and swirl. We were made to leap and lean into the music with our whole selves.
Sadly, these inhibitions don’t last as long as we hope. Doubt creeps in and fearing we can’t dance, we forget we ever could.
Sometimes the harsh reality of real life steals our desire to dance. Someone may have told we weren’t good enough and we must stop making a fool of ourselves.
But the truth is Your Father delights in you. He smiles at your side steps and bouncing to the beat. In fact, He is inviting you to dance again. He is inviting you to take joy in this life, even when, especially when, joy seems hard to come by.
Psalm 149 puts it this way:
“Praise the Lord!
Sing to the Lord a new song,
his praise in the assembly of the godly! Let Israel be glad in his Maker;
let the children of Zion
rejoice in their King!
Let them praise his name with dancing, making melody to him
with tambourine and lyre!
For the Lord takes pleasure in his people; he adorns the humble with salvation.”
May this truth inspire to pray this prayer today:
“Father in Heaven, You say You take pleasure in me. You say, if I am Yours, you crown my head with salvation. This alone is reason to dance. A song should rise up inside me that my feet cannot deny. My body should sway to the song of your goodness and your faithfulness.
But I have forgotten how to dance. So, I come to you again today, humbly, asking you to forgive me for my forgetting. I have allowed the cares of this world to choke out the truth of who You are and who I am because of You. Remind me today of your steadfast love. Give me a fresh dose of your ever-enduring mercy. Show me Your glory in the wonder of your magnificent creation.
And then teach me to dance again. Put a new song in my mouth that makes me clap my hands. I want to show you my love for You with my whole being. I want to dance again.”
Put on some music, my friend. Dance until you are smiling again.
